It’s Not Just About the Brain Freeze

September 4, 2017

My name is Lara, I am Lynne’s daughter. While I may not always be able to do the day tripping with her, we do try out some other things.

What could be better to have on a hot summer day than ice cream!? I have wanted to try Butter & Cream in Decatur for awhile. So, we stopped by one afternoon to try the place out.

The store is small, only a few places to sit down inside, and a counter where the young lady working was making homemade waffle cones – the smell was heavenly! You can walk up to the counter to place your order, but then you see the temptation of the cookies and all the available flavors. These are not your ordinary ice cream flavors. Yes, you can get vanilla, but it is Tahitian Vanilla; you can get coffee, but it is Kona Coffee. Some other flavors that may tickle your tastebuds: Butterscotch Brownie, Honeycomb Forest or even OG Goodness – you have to ask what that is! They also have sorbets and rotating seasonal flavors (I need to go back and try the Cherry Pie!).

Toppings, slushies, floats, sundaes and shakes are all available, but the best is the Ice Cream Sandwiches!! You can choose an already matched flavor to cookie or build your own. I was trying to be good (yeah, right!) and went for an open face sandwich and just got one cookie – Chocolate Chip with some salted caramel ice cream. This was HEAVENLY!! I don’t remember what mom got, but she loved hers as well.

I highly recommend this Decatur ice cream store (there is one in Roswell too, but I have not been there). Check them out: http://www.butterandcream.com/ Located: 416 Church St. Decatur

My search for some really good ice cream not from a grocery store freezer continued and led me to Jeni’s at Avalon. This place is kinda small, but has a nice place to sit down and enjoy your ice cream outside.

Basically, inside you stand in front of the ice cream and see all the flavors while you enjoy the smell of the waffle cones being made. One of the employees will wait on you, you can taste any of the flavors you have in mind. Some of the flavors are quite unusual and there are some seasonal flavors as well: Mocha Black Cherry, Hard Cider Sorbet, Savannah Buttermint and my favorite – Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks!

They do cones and shakes and just scoops in a waffle bowl, but what we tried was call a sample flight. A sample flight is 3 half scoops of any flavor in a bowl with a waffle cone chip! Of course I got the peanut butter, milkiest chocolate and cream puff. It was all so good and plenty to sample each flavor!

Jeni’s has multiple locations, but we visited the newest at Avalon:  800 1st St, Alpharetta, GA 30009  https://jenis.com/avalon/

Continuing on with ice cream in the Atlanta area, mom and I decided to try The Frosty Caboose. This is actually a caboose located next to the train tracks in the Chamblee Antique Row area off Buford Highway. The parking has a lot of space and areas for the kids to play.

Their flavors vary daily, but they do make shakes and malts as well as sundaes. Mom and I went for waffle cones with 2 scoops each – they did say we could do ½ scoop of each flavor if we wanted. Mom went with black cherry and almond amaretto (which had a big pistachio in the middle of it – we aren’t sure why?) and I went with Chocolate Peanut Butter and Salted Caramel Chunk (it had chocolate covered caramel pieces in it).

This was good and quite popular the Sunday we visited. But, just average ice cream….a good place to visit, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go get ice cream here. Kids might like it for the ambiance – I mean, what kid doesn’t want to play on a train!?

Frosty Caboose is a one and only location:  5435 Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341  https://www.facebook.com/FrostyCaboose/
